Originally, a sugar factory

Owned by the Terra Group since its origins, the Mon Rocher estate covered nearly 340 arpents (around 142 hectares) in 1870. The estate is mentioned in the register of former sugar factories of the Pamplemousses district, which was then the vibrant heart of Mauritius.

Today, a cultural heritage

The history of sugar is closely linked to the economic development of the island. Today, most sugar factories, including Mon Rocher, have been dismantled, with sugar production now concentrated on a handful of estates. The remaining vestiges at Mon Rocher stand as living symbols of the region’s rich history.

A testament to Mauritius’ past

Among these remains are the former factory chimney and old cut stones that once formed part of the sugar mill. These structures are precious witnesses to the past, which is why Novaterra has made it a priority to preserve and rehabilitate them as part of the development of the Mon Rocher neighbourhood in Beau Plan.
